Everest – The Wheel of Life

Everest – The Wheel of Life, by Brigitte Muir (2008)

Oil (Sennelier) on gesso, tablet size: 153x194x17 mm.

When a painting wants to be born, it usually names itself before materialising. Everest is a wheel of life, and each part of the picture represents experiences in our existence, in a cycle of birth and death in learning. From the red of life beginnings and ends, to the summit of impermanence and the liberation brought on by completing a cycle, this came to me as a symbol of the oneness of our universe, I am the mountain, and the mountain is I.

I am auctioning this painting, looking for a good home for it. The reserve price is AUD1350, with frame if you want it. ( not including postage).

The bhavacakra – wheel of life  (Sanskrit; Pāli: bhavacakka; Tibetan: srid pa’i ‘khor lo) is a symbolic representation of saṃsāra (or cyclic existence) found on the outside walls of Tibetan Buddhist temples and monasteries in the Indo-Tibetan region.

The images in the hub of the wheel represent the three poisons of ignorance, attachment and aversion.

  1. The second layer represents karma.
  2. The third layer represents the six realms of samsara.
  3. The fourth layer represents the twelve links of dependent origination.
  4. The fierce figure holding the wheel represents impermanence.[3]
  5. The moon above the wheel represents liberation from samsara or cyclic existence.
  6. The Buddha pointing to the white circle indicates that liberation is possible.

Brigitte Koch-Muir OAM summitted Everest in 1997, on her fourth attempt. Storms, spending the night out at 8500m without light or oxygen, and being caught in the 1996 disaster on the South Col of Everest are some of the challenges she faced before eventually summitting. She was a high altitude expedition climber, and leader, for almost thirty years. She is now a story teller, and belongs to the Beyond the Smile Friendily, and the SEED Alliances, a network of people excited by the idea of changing the world by implementing a business model based on the seven chakras, and having fun doing it.
